How to Play Solitaire

Solitaire is one of the most popular card games in the world. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to sharpen your skills, this guide covers everything you need to know to play and enjoy solitaire.

Setting Up the Game

Klondike Solitaire uses a standard 52-card deck. The tableau consists of seven columns of cards. The first column has one card, the second has two, and so on up to seven. Only the top card of each column is face-up. The remaining 24 cards form the stock pile.

Objective

Move all 52 cards to the four foundation piles, building each foundation up by suit from Ace to King. Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, and Spades each have their own foundation pile.

Moving Cards

In the tableau, arrange cards in descending order and alternating colors. For example, a red 6 can be placed on a black 7. You can move groups of properly sequenced cards between tableau columns. When a face-down card is uncovered, it's automatically turned face-up. Only Kings can be placed on empty tableau columns.

Using the Stock Pile

Click the stock pile to draw cards. Drawn cards go to the waste pile. The top card of the waste pile is available for play. When the stock is empty, click the empty stock area to recycle the waste pile back to the stock.

Winning the Game

You win when all four foundation piles are complete — each containing 13 cards from Ace through King, all of the same suit. Not every game of Solitaire is winnable — approximately 79% of Klondike deals can be solved with perfect play.
